We are still several days away from the launch of a new school year, but it was nice yesterday to see several of our upper-division students back on campus. These rising 2Ls and 3Ls arrived in professional business attire to interview with prospective employers as the first session of what we call “OCI” got underway.
OCI stands for “On Campus Interviews.” For a certain period of time, Fall OCI was one of the major ways students landed jobs, but as the legal profession evolves, fewer employers hire through OCI than before. Still, OCI is the main way rising 2Ls secure summer associate positions with large firms for the summer following the 2L year, and those summer associate positions have the potential to become job offers following graduation. In addition, many other types of employers offering many other types of jobs also participate in OCI.
As a result, our students are experiencing a new kind of nervousness–the “big interview” kind of nervousness!
Dean Hom and the entire CDO team is working hard this week both to welcome employers and coach our students. It is an exciting time.
